Toote kirjeldus: Twenty Chickens for a Saddle: The Story of an African Childhood

Twenty Chickens for a Saddle is the story of a highly unorthodox family and their enthusiasm for each other and the world around them. Robyn's father is a small-planeflying doctor who always wanted to be a vet. He becomes a local hero flying from one rural clinic to the next, impressing his more superstitious patients as much with his fearless snake handling as with his medical skills. Her mother is a scientist who believes in holistic medicine, homeschooling, and a relentlessly optimistic approach to life. Both are deeply eccentric, and under their relaxed guidance, life for the children is a daily adventure of the kind usually confined to storybooks. It is storybooks, in fact, that comprise most of their homeschool education, along with searching the surrounding bush for animals (poisonous and otherwise) to let loose in their schoolroom. As a result of the absolute freedom of spirit, thought, and movement that they are given, all three children grow into fascinating characters in their own right.Later, the family relocates to a game farm bordering South Africa, and the children become more aware of the darker undercurrents of life in Africa. Here the old apartheid mind-set endures in many of their white South African neighbors. And when, at fourteen, Robyn begins conventional school in neighboring Zimbabwe, she regularly sees the racism initially only glimpsed in tolerant Botswana. AIDS also rears its head. Long witnessed by Robyn's father at his village clinics, the disease is belatedly tackled by the government only as death, on an unprecedented scale, begins to devastate the peaceful and prosperous African country.
'Beautifully written, acutely observed This is a wonderful memoir of an exotic childhood and a striking portrait of one of the world's most beguiling countries. A gem of a book.' ALEXANDER MCCALL SMITH
