The author examines the complexity of security relations between the European Union and China, looking at the impact of changing geopolitical settings on their relations over time in the context of three case studies of how and why cooperation occurs anti-terrorism, maritime security and anti-piracy, and climate and energy security, to illustrate the rationales, dynamics, and consequences of their cooperation despite political tensions in other policy fields. She argues that while economy and trade are at the center of European Union-China relations, the security dimension of the relationship is characterized by a mix of opportunities and obstacles. She focuses on role conceptions and mutual perceptions in their corporation and discusses the underlying foreign and security policy principles of the European Union and China, then the temporal dimensions of the three case studies, ending with discussion of the role of the US.
