Sex in Tourism: Exploring the Light and the Dark

This volume contains 15 essays that explore the role of sex in tourism experiences globally. Tourism and other researchers from around the world examine aspects from the light side, involving mutually rewarding and safe sexual expression between consenting adults, to the dark side of the continuum, such as child sex tourism and human trafficking. They discuss ethics in the context of sex and sex tourism, then the lighter aspects, including gender differences and similarities in the perceptions of and experiences with sex and sexual risk taking in tourism with young adults in the US, sex in the context of summer camp experiences in North America, sexual interactions in backpacker tourism around the world and volunteer tourism in South America, the relevance of the internet in adult heterosexual intimacy between Brazilian women and European men, and relationships between the use of Tinder, self-representation, and tourism. They then address the gray shades of sex tourism, including sex tourism in terms of animals and robots, sex tourism in the Caribbean, the influence of sex tourism on girls and young women's education in Kenya for those involved in the sex trade, and residents’ awareness, knowledge, and perceptions of tourism and its links to HIV/AIDS in Botswana, then the dark aspects, particularly sexual harassment of housekeeping employees in Portuguese hotels and child sex tourism in Thailand, the Dominican Republic, and the Gambia, as well as the roles of local communities in intervening in child sex tourism.
