Alec Karakatsanis, a former public defender, is founder of Civil Rights Corps, an organization devoted to challenging the systemic injustice of the criminal punishment bureaucracy. In this accessible discussion for students, scholars, and general readers, he describes and condemns the criminal punishment bureaucracy and warns of threats to the criminal justice reform movement. The book consists of three essays explaining how the criminal legal system works against justice and equality, outlining the role of individuals within the punishment bureaucracy from law school classrooms to court rooms, and calling for law students and lawyers to fight against mass imprisonment and constitutional violations in the legal system.
