Max Horkheimer (1895-1973), one of the philosophers who founded the Frankfurt School, directed the Institute for Social Research and taught philosophy and sociology at the University of Frankfurt, Germany. According to Horkheimer, the book "inquires into the concept of rationality that underlies our contemporary industrial culture." He examines the rise of reason in Western philosophy and looks at how the Nazis used the ideas of rationality for their own irrational agenda.
