Totalitarianism

Author David D. Roberts (history emeritus, University of Georgia) redefines totalitarianism as an aspiration and direction. He charts the development of the concept of totalitarianism from the 1920s to the present. He first examines how totalitarianism manifested in Fascist Italy, Nazi Germany, and the Stalinist Soviet Union, then dissects mutations of totalitarianism in the 21st century, including China under Xi Jinping, Russia under Vladimir Putin, the Islamic Republic of Iran, and neo-fascism and populism the Islamic world. The book also addresses the emerging surveillance state as a form of totalitarianism, and considers methods for preventing or minimizing totalitarianism. Less than a century old, the concept of totalitarianism is one of the most controversial in political theory, with some proposing to abandon it altogether.
