This text teaches the mathematics required for the full range of topics that make up a university degree course in chemistry. Few assumptions are made of prior knowledge of mathematics. A feature of the book is the extensive use of examples to illustrate every important concept and method in the text. Some of these examples have also been used to demonstrate applications of mathematics in chemistry and several basic concepts in physics. Topics are organized in three sections: algebra, calculus, differential equations, and expansions in series; vectors, determinants, and matrices; and numerical analysis and statistics. Footnotes within the text offer a history of mathematics. For this second edition, material is reorganized to link chapter exercises more closely with the text and examples. There is expanded coverage of factorization, factors, and factorials, and a rewritten and enlarged section on units.
